Abstract

The aim of present study was to investigate the relationship between two holistic constructs of self-awareness, mindfulness and integrative self-knowledge, and their associations with physical, psychological, social and spiritual health problem. To do so, 249 Iranian university students,170 women and 79men,completed following scales: Mindfulness Attention Awareness (Brown & Ryan, 2003), Integrative Self-Knowledge (Ghorbani, Watson & Hargis, 2008), Biopsychosociospiritual inventory (Katerndahl& Oyiriaru, 2007), and Depression Anxiety Stress (Lovibond&Lovibond, 1995). The data showed that these two constructs of self-awareness are negatively associated with all aspects of health. The integrative self-knowledge also predicted all measures of health that are beyond the mindfulness. These results point toward the integrative and temporal nature of self- awareness processes and suggest a need for studying the direction and nature of relation between Self-awareness and health.

Abstract

The present study examined the relationship between Self-Compassion, Self-esteem, Shame-Proneness and Guilt-Proneness with experiencing shame and guilt after reminding the experience of fault and transgression. To do so, in a quasi-experimental design, 80 students (26 males and 54 females) of the University of Tehran filled Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem Scales and Shame-Proneness and Guilt-Proneness subscales of the Test of Self- Conscious Affect-3. After shame and guilt induction by reminding and writing about an experience of fault and transgression, Participants reported their unpleasant emotions by the adjective-checklist of shame and guilt based on Tangney`s theory and the scale of unpleasant emotions. The Results revealed that shame-proneness was positively and self-compassion was negatively associated with the unpleasant emotions. Self-esteem was correlated negatively with the shame only and guilt-proneness showed no significant relationship with the unpleasant emotions. As hypothesized, self-compassion predicted unpleasant emotions that are beyond the shame-proneness and guilt proneness, while self-esteem wasn’t the predictor of the unpleasant emotions. The results were explained based on the different nature of self-compassion and self-esteem constructs.

Abstract

With the development of Brief Self-Control Scale most studies in this field has used it widely for the measurement of the general capacity of self-control. Discordant findings on the adaptiveness of self-control have brought about doubt concerning unidimensionality of this scale. The aim of the present study was to investigate the factor structure of BSCS in Iran. 247 Iranian university students (188 women, 53 men and 6 undefined) completed the following scales: BSCS, Rumination Scale, Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Vitality Scale, & Anxiety and Depression Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that one-factor structure of BSCS did not fit the data well. Explanatory factor analysis (EFA) proposed two-factor structure of the scale that fit the data well and performed better than one-factor structure in a new CFA. The results were discussed through considering the viewpoints concerning the two facets of self-control and they confirmed the need for reviewing the theories and research on the inhibitory and initiatory facets of self-control.

Abstract

Spirituality and Practice of Religious Beliefs as related variables to psychological and physical well-being are able to explain most of positive consequences in chronic pain sufferers. The aim of this study was to determine predictor role of those variables in predicting pain experience acceptance in Rheumatoid arthritis patients. In this correlative descriptive study, 80 Rheumatoid arthritis patients were chosen by purposive non-random sampling method. They accomplished Spirituality Insight Appraisal Questionnaire, Practice of Religious Beliefs Inventory (MABAD), and Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire- Revised (CPQA-R). Data was analyzed by Pearson correlation and multiple regression statistical tests. Spiritual ability (a spirituality component) had significant role in predicting Activity engagement (a pain acceptance component) (p<0/01). There was no relationship between practice of religious beliefs and pain acceptance considering result of this study, when Spirituality presented in behavior (spiritual ability) can play effective role in predicting pain experience acceptance in Rheumatoid arthritis patients. Spirituality only as an ideology cannot predict pain acceptance in Rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Abstract

The human mental organization has a behavioral regulative principle that operates based on certain conscious and unconscious needs. Experience of stress disrupts human mental structure and results in symptoms of psychological and physical disorders. One source of stress is having ailing children. Accordingly, this study investigates self-regulation mediational processes in the context of perceived stress in mothers of children diagnosed with cancer. The convenience sample of this study consisted of 245 mothers, who volunteered to participate and were administered the following questionnaires: Integrative self-knowledge; Self-control Scale; Self-compassion Scale; perceived stress and Chronic Self-destructiveness Scale, body-symptoms checklist. Analysis of the survey data was carried out using structural equation modeling (SEM). The analysis suggests that perceived stress is mediated through self-regulation for self-destructiveness, physical symptoms, and unpleasant self-relevant through. Therefore, exposure to stress has destructive effects both in terms of physical symptoms and on an emotional and behavioral level. The authors concluded that self-regulation was a supportive variable, helping individuals cope better with unpleasant events, retrieve their ideal mental balance and maintain their mental organization. It is implied that based on a self-regulation model, effective management of one’s mental organization can improve an individual’s capacity to effectively cope with inevitable sources of stress.

Abstract

Defense mechanisms are a determining factor for the level of psychological pathology, and this is of particular importance in atopic dermatitis patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy on the defense mechanisms of patients with atopic dermatitis. The present study is a semi-experimental design of single subject type. The statistical population of this study included patients with atopic dermatitis who referred to Razi Hospital in Tehran in 2019, of which 5 people were selected through available sampling. These people underwent 10 individual sessions of intensive short-term psychodynamic therapy. Subjects completed the defense mechanisms questionnaire during the baseline phase, during the intervention, and during follow-up. To analyze the data, visual analysis and calculation of recovery percentage were used. According to the scores of the patients in the charts of changes, all patients showed an acceptable improvement in defense styles. The overall improvement rate of patients in underdeveloped, developed, and neurotic defense styles at the end of the intervention were 37.6%, 49.2%, and 40.4%, respectively, which indicates the effectiveness of short-term intensive dynamic psychotherapy in reducing Underdeveloped and neurotic defensive styles and increased defensive style are developed.
