Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the depression, aggression, and self-esteem of adolescents with high-conflict and low-conflict parents. With this purpose in mind, 230 adolescent girls who were studying in high schools of Bahar city of Hamadan province, were selected by cluster sampling method and completed following questionnaires: The Children's Perceptions of Interparental Conflict Scale(CPIC), Modified Depression Scale, hostility scale of Symptom Checklist 90 ( SCL-90), and Hare Area-Specific Self-Esteem Scale. Data analyzed by multivariate analysis. The results showed that there are significant differences between adolescents with high and low conflicted parents in term of level of depression, aggression, and self-esteem. Adolescents who perceived their parents more conflicted had higher levels of depression and aggression and lower levels of self-esteem. In sum, the findings indicate that parent’s conflict resolution style has negative mental health outcomes for their children. Finally, the implications of findings are discussed.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of bullying among students and its relationship to the quality of family environment, impulsivity, depression, beliefs supportiveofaggressive behavior, and attitude towards school. The sample consisted of 344 secondary school students (205 girls and 139 boys) in Kermanshah who were selected by multistage cluster sampling method. They completed Olweus Bully/victim Questionnaire, University of Texas Depression scale, Impulsivity scale(Bosworth, 1999), Beliefs supportive of Violence (Dahlberg et al., 1998), Psychological sense of School membership scale (Goodenow, 1993), and family climate scale(Holman et al., 1994). Data was analyzed by descriptive analysis procedures and stepwise regression analysis. The results showed that different forms of bullying behaviors prevalence are 13/7 to 52/1 percent for boys, and 10/2 to 64.6 percent for girls. The most reported bullying behaviors for both of groups were name calling and teasing in hurtful way, and the least reported bullying behaviors were taking money or other thing away and damaging them. Results showed that among girls, among all studied variables have significant correlations with bullying behavior, but among boys just three variables (the quality of family climate, depression, and impulsivity) were significantly correlated with bullying behavior. Stepwise regression analysis also showed that for girls, the three variables Quality family atmosphere, a sense of belonging to school and attitudes toward violence significantly predict bullying, but for boys, only impulsivity was significant predictor.. Finally, the implications of findings are discussed.

Abstract

Increasing pressure of stressors along with anxietyand depression reduce the human being’s ability todeal with simple issues of life. Women who are oftenfacingwith stressful situations are more fragile andvulnerable than men. The purpose of the present studywas to investigate the effect of Sahaja-Yogamindfulness exercises on reducing stress, anxiety anddepression in women with Stress, anxiety anddepression disorders. The Research design was Pretest
Post-test without control group. The statisticalpopulation of this research included 700 women who
went to Tehran’s Shahid Shirin health center. Basedon the purpose of the study, 20 women were selectedby the convenience sampling method. Theyweretrained in 12 two-hour sessions which lasted 3months. For the pre-test, post-test and the 3-monthfollow-up, depression, anxiety and stress scale wasused to collectdata. Analysis of variance withrepeated measures and t- test were used to analyze thecollected data. The results indicated that there wasasignificantdifference between the pre-test and posttestin terms of the reduction of stress, anxiety anddepression (p<0.01). The same results were obtainedafter a 3-month follow-up (p<0.01). So it seems thatthe Sahaja Yoga mindfulness exercise program, as asupplementary intervention, along with other commontreatments can be useful for treating emotionaproblems of individuals, especially women.

Abstract

In recent years, rumination has been used in the etiology of depression and hopelessness as two proximal predictors of suicide ideation and behavior. But findings have been inconsistent with respect to the role of rumination subtypes in the prediction of suicidal ideation and it was supposed that reflection (focusing on the causes of depressed mood) was a more adaptive form than the brooding (focusing on the results of depressed mood). The present study, in the context of Ruminative Response style theory of depression, aimed at examining the role of rumination and its subtypes along with depression and hopelessness in the prediction of suicidal ideation. To this end, 177 undergraduate students with scores of 10 or higher in BDI-II were asked to complete rumination and hopelessness scales and questions about suicide ideation. Using logistic regression technique, it was shown that this model could predict 59.3% of the likelihood of the presence of suicidal ideation. This study was in line with earlier studies which have presumed reflection as the more adaptive subtype. Results also suggested that there was a greater correlation between rumination, its subtypes and suicidal ideation in females. This study also emphasizes the use of interventions targeting rumination in order to prevent suicidal ideations.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of spirituality on the lifestyle and the percentages of the white blood cells in the depressed aged subjects. A quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test was used. Statistical society of research consisted of the total depressed aged subjects of an aged house (Mehr aged house, Karaj city, Alborze province, Iran). The subjects were divided into two equal groups (12 experimental group and 12 control group) and they responded the lifestyle questionnaire. Then, the percentages of the white blood cells were measured using the flowcytometry method. The experimental group received 14 sessions of the spiritual intervention, then lifestyle and the percentages of the white blood cells were measured. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups after the intervention on the lifestyle (health, disease prevention, mental health, spiritual health and social health) and the percentages of the white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes) (P≤0.05).Thus, spirituality, as a protective factor can promote the health of aged subjects, due to improvement of lifestyle and higher percentages of the white blood cells.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to test the causal model of depression based on lifestyle with mediation role of social health. The study sample was consisted of all individuals over 18 years old who was selected by multistage random cluster sampling method. Based on the estimated Cochran of the sample, 383 individuals were selected. Instruments for gathering data were health promoting lifestyle questionnaire (Walker and polerrcky, 1996), Keyes social health (2004) and the Beck Depression Inventory II. The prevalence of depression have been estimated 15% in this population. There have associations between life style, social health and depression. Social health has a mediator role in the relationship between life style and depression. Findings of the path analysis also showed that nutrition, responsibility for the health, exercise and spiritual growth had significant direct and indirect effect on depression.

Abstract

The objective of this study were to investigate Lynch’s theory of psychopathology with regard to depression. students from three universities in Tehran (n= 521) was selected by convenience sampling method. The measures used in this study were negative temperament scale of Schedule of Non-adaptive and Adaptive Personality, Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale, maladaptive perfectionism subscales of Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire, Personal Need for Structure Scale, Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, Social Safeness and Pleasure Scale and Beck Depression Inventory. The results showed that the model has good fit with data. Bootstrap analysis also confirmed the mediating role of over-controlling and social disconnectedness. Accordingly, the interaction of sensitivity to threats, sensitivity to rewards and parental perfectionism leads to development of an over-controlling coping style; this coping style leads to disturbance in social connectedness and subsequently to depression. Therefore, the results of this study support the Lynch’s model of psychopathology for depression.

Abstract

The aime of this study was to investigate a transdiagnostic model for explaining comorbidity between anxiety and depression based on the overcontrolling, sensivity to reward and sensivity to threat. The participants were 586 students of Islamic Azad University Tabriz Branch, University of Tabriz and Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University in Iran. Data were collected by Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II), behavioural inhibtion/Behavioural activation scale (BAS/BIS), Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS), Ambivalence over Emotional Expression Questionnaire (AEQ) and Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS). Sensitivity to reward with overcontrolling mediation affects anxiety and depression with standard coefficients of -0.29 and -0.36. Also, sensitivity to threat with standardized coefficients of 0.31 and 0.39, respectively, have a significant effect on anxiety and depression by the mediation of overcontrolling. Our findings proposes a suitable framework for explaining comorbidity between depression and anxiety. Low sensitivity to reward and high sensitivity to threat by the mediation role of overcontrolling could predict comorbidity between anxiety and depression. These findings can be useful in understanding the etiology of comorbid emotional disorders, and developing  efficacious therapeutic interventions and prevention of  comorbid emotional disorders.

Abstract

Positive cognitive behavioral therapy is an integrated approach in psychotherapy which combines cognitive behavioral therapy with solution-focused therapy and positive psychology. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of positive cognitive behavioral therapy (PCBT) and traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on mental well-being and resilience in adolescents with depressive symptoms. This study was an Quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttests with control group. For this purpose, first, depression scale was performed on male students. Among those students whose depression score was higher than the cutoff point, randomly, 17 were divided to the experimental group 1 (PCBT), 17 were divided to the experimental group 2 (CBT), and 17 were divided to the control group (without intervention). Then, scales of Subjective well-being of students and Connor and Davison resiliency were implemented as pretests. Then, interventions in experimental groups and no intervention in control group were performed, and finally, the above scales were performed as post-tests and follow up. Results showed that student’s score in subjective well-being and resiliency with PCBT were significantly higher than CBT and control group. It seems that; PCBT can be more effective in enhancing positive performance components. It’s necessary that; further research should highlight this issue

Abstract

This paper examined the effectiveness of integrated meta-diagnostic treatment on rumination, cognitive distortions and cognitive avoidance among women with depression. Women visited depression treatment centers in Abadan city in 1403 for depression treatment constituted the statistical population of the research. Due to the small size of the population and the limitation of the statistical population, the sampling method was purposeful.  The total number of people eligible to enter this research was 30 which were randomly assigned into two groups of 15. The following standard questionnaires were used for collecting the necessary data:  Cognitive Avoidance Questionnaire by Sexton and Dagas (CAQ), Rumination Questionnaire by Nalan Hoeksma and Maro 1991, Cognitive Distortions Questionnaire by Abdullah Zadeh and Salar (1389), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) by Laibond and Laibond (1995) and integrated meta-diagnostic treatment protocol.   SPSS 21 software was used to analyze the data. Indicators such as mean and standard deviation were determined. Univariate and multivariate covariance analysis were also used to check the hypothesizes.  The findings showed that integrated trans-diagnostic treatment has an effect on rumination, cognitive distortions and cognitive avoidance among women with depression disorder. This effect has continued in the follow-up phase.
