Abstract

Employees expect respect from their co-workers and supervisors and guarantee of job security which is appropriate for their efforts in the workplace. Also, those with overcommitment to work need to be more supported. A set of these variables are included in the effort-reward imbalance model. The objectives of this study were to assess validity of the ERI model and its effects on fatigue, emotional exhaustion, physical health and psychosomatic complaints. To test validity of ERI model, a sample of 235 personnel of an industrial company in Isfahan, Iran, was selected. To measure predictor variables, ERI questionnaire (Zurlo, Pes & Siegrist, 2010) was used. To measure criterion variables Including fatigue, emotional exhaustion, physical health and psychosomatic complaints, fatigue scale (Chalder & et al,1993),emotional exhaustion scale(Malach,1998),Physical health scale (Hilderbrandt & et al, 1991) and psychosomatic complaints scale(Driken,1969) were used respectively.  Factor analysis of ERI scale elicit four subscale namely job security, respect, effort and overcommitment with favorable stability. The results showed that there was a positive relation between two subscales of respect and job security and criterion variables. There was also a negative relation between two subscales of effort and overcommitment and criterion variables. The results of this study can be of prime importance for the improvement of personnel’s health in the industrial environments.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explain obsessive-compulsive symptoms according to disgust, anxiety and depression in a non-clinical sample. one hundred students (50 girls, 50 boys) were included in this study. All participants were asked to complete Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI), Disgust Scale (DS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics including means, standard deviations, Pearson' correlation coefficients and regression analyses. The results revealed that disgust, anxiety and depression were significantly positively correlated with total obsessive-compulsive scores in both males and females. The results of regression analysis showed checking and doubt symptoms were best predicted by state-trait anxiety, while washing were best predicted by disgust. These findings are in line with the hypothesis of a specific relationship between disgust and at least some kinds of obsessive symptoms.

Abstract

DSM-IV-TR recognized that it is possible for individuals to receive a PTSD diagnosis following experiencing life threatening illness including HIV/AIDS.  This development has raised some questions about the nature of the stressor, and psychiatric symptoms experienced such as memory performance. The current study examines PTSD symptoms and autobiographical memory performance among individuals who have experienced AIDS or HIV. Participants in this study included 30 individuals with AIDS, and were matched by sex, age, level of education, marital and socio- economic status with 30 healthy controls. Both groups were administered the Impact of Event Scale (IES-R), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck’s Anxiety Inventory (BDI), Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI) and Autobiographical memory Test (AMT). The results indicated high PTSD symptoms, depression and anxiety among patient group. The findings also showed that the personal semantic memory scores were lower in childhood and early adult stages among HIV/AIDS survivors comparing with normal control subjects. The findings are discussed in terms of the role of the self and processes involved in non-specific retrieval of autobiographical material

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between social adjustment and irrational beliefs among university students. The other aim was to examine mediatory role of coping with stress styles. For those purpose, 280 subjects (141 female and 139 male) were selected randomly from Urmia University students. Joneُs irrational beliefs test (IBT) (Zolfaghari Motlag, 1377), Endler and Parker coping styles inventory (Rodger et.al, 1993) and Bell΄s adjustment scale ) Warbah et.al, 20007) were used. The data were analyzed by Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression. The findings revealed that irrational beliefs had negative relationship with student social adjustment and its components could predict adjustment (P<001). In addition, the analysis of regression showed that avoidance coping with stress style did play meditative role between irrational beliefs and social adjustment. According to the results, it  may be concluded irrational beliefs change will help better social adjustment.

Abstract

The Purpose of current article is to report a study on group, and individual cognative-behavioural psychotherapy in decreasing prisoners' psychological symptoms based on their religious knowledge.
By using systematic sampling technique 45 male prisoners in Rajaei Shahr Prison was selected randomly and allocated into three groups : a) 15 participants was allocated in individual cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy alongside group cognitive-behavioral one based on participants' religious knowledge(combined therapy group) b) 15 participants took part in individual cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, based on participants' religious knowledge (individual  therapy group)and c)15 participant was placed on the waiting list for obtaining individual therapy(control group).
By using GHQ and SCL-90 tests, as well as a diagnostic interview done by a psychiatrist based on DSM-IV-TR criteria in pre and post period of recruiting interventions, participants' psychological status was measured.
The data was analyzed by using Multiple Analysis of Variance. The findings indicated that although both of combined therapy approach and individual therapy one had immense influence on decreasing prisoners' psychological symptoms, the amount of effectiveness of combined therapy approach was higher than individual therapy was.
One of the factors that have a remarkable impact on a successful cognitive therapy based on religious knowledge is the similarity of principles related to health psychology in cognitive-behavioural approach, and religious knowledge. Beck believes that a fruitful therapy happens when a patient approaches to realties. That point refers to aims, and consequences of saying prayers in Islam. Since Islam has an influential role in Iran culture, any kind of cognitive-behavioural intervention based on religious coulter have a considerable role in enhancing social-psycho adjustment for Iranian population.

Abstract

Spiritual intelligence encompasses a set of abilities and capacities that use spiritual resources to increase individual well-being and adaptability. Due to differences in how to express the spiritual intelligence of different cultures, this research seeks to explain spiritual intelligence components based on the Iranian culture in order to provide appropriate instrument for measuring those components. To this end, first principles theoretical study of library research conducted on spiritual intelligence and spiritual intelligence components to describe the culture ofIran, the main religious texts of the dominant culture ofIranwere studied and a total of eight components were extracted. The questionnaire including 108 questions was compiled to measure each of these factors on sample 557 people with cluster sampling method. After removal of 11 questions with load factor of less than 0/4, total reliability of final questionnaire (97 questions) was 0/98. In order to provide factorial structure of the questionnaire, the exploratory factor analysis was used and the result of study indicated that four factors explained 48/39 percent of the total variance of the questionnaire. To explain the factors extracted in the analysis of main components which were above the line gradient, named as transcendent consciouness, spiritual experience, tolerance and forgiveness.

Abstract

The goal of the present study was to predict safety behaviors in insomnia by investigating a number of predicting variables including depression, anxiety, worry, pre- sleep arousal (cognitive and somatic arousal), dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and metacognitive beliefs in insomnia. 400 students of Tehran University of Medical Sciences participated in this study and all participants completed Depression Anxiety Stress Scales(DASS), Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale, Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep Scale(DBAS), Metacognitions Questionnaire-Insomnia and Sleep Related Behaviors Questionnaire. All variables were significantly correlated with safety behaviors. Stepwise multiple regression analysis suggested that metacognitive beliefs in insomnia, somatic arousal and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep predicted safety behaviors in insomnia. Depression, anxiety, worry and cognitive arousal were excluded from the predicting model. The findings underlined the significant influence that metacognitive beliefs in insomnia, somatic arousal and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep had on individuals’ behaviors. Moreover, the results suggested that metacognitive beliefs in insomnia may need to be considered an important factor in maintaining insomnia.

Abstract

The goal of this research was an investigation into the implicit and explicit memory bias against negative emotional information processing in adolescents with high and low trait anxiety. To do so, 2 adolescent groups of twenty with high trait (n=20) and low trait (n=20) were selected from a large pole of adolescents using Spielbergr’s State-Trait Anxiety inventory for Children (STAI-C). Following the two groups were matched in terms of variables including age, sex,and education level, Explicit Memory Test(EMT) and Implicit Memory Test(IMT),completing word stems, were used to assess the subjects. The stimulants, emotional items, included two series of threatening and neutral words in EXP and a set of ambiguous words. The results indicated that there were no significant differences between high trait and low trait anxiety groups in terms of subject sensitivity and bias against threatening and neutral stimulants. However, high trait group had completed words stems more than low trait group in implicit memory test. These results indicated the presence of implicit memory bias in high trait group. Generally, the results of the present research are in accord with other researches and support the principles governing memory bias and trait anxiety.

Abstract

This study has been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of group cognitive behavioral therapy for severity of pain and mental health in individuals with back pain. This is a quasi-experimental research and posttest-pretest, control group design is used. Of women with chronic back pain who came to Imam Khomeni Hospital and who consulted a physician in his surgery in 2011,30 women, having average age of 33 years and seven months, were selected randomly and were also put randomly into two groups of fifteen. All participants completed General Health Questionnaire(GHQ) and Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale  before and after intervention. After 12 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy, t The results indicated that the back pain significantly decreased and mental health improved significantly, too. According to the findings of the study, it can be said that group cognitive behavioral therapy would lead to the improvement of bio- psychological components through affecting mechanisms involved in Melzack’s neuromatrix and changing psychological structures, as a mediator of pain. Therefore, group cognitive behavioral therapy is a useful intervention for reducing severity of pain, as well as increasing mental health

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the dimensions of Family communication patterns (conversation orientation and conformity orientation) and adolescents' Shyness. The sample the study included 367 students, 232 girls and 135 boys, who were first and second high school students in the first region of Tehran, and they were selected through multistage cluster sampling method. The subjects filled in the revised family communication patterns scale (koerner & Fitzpatrick, 2002) and Cheek and Buss Shyness scale (1981). Regression analysis was used to predict shyness by Dimensions of family communication patterns. Then, four kinds of families were extracted based on high and low scores on dimensions of family communication patterns and the adolescents’ shyness in these families was compared by using One-way ANOVA analysis. The results of regression analysis revealed that family conversation orientation had a negative and significant relationship with shyness and predicted it negatively and family conformity orientation had a positive and significant relationship with adolescents' shyness and predicted it positively. The results of the analysis of variance indicated a significant difference between these groups and showed that the children in consensual and pluralistic Families had less shyness than the children in protective and careless families. The findings of the present research showed that  families with conversation orientation, who had free, comfortable and rich relationships as a need for joyful family life, raised children who are less shy in comparison with the children being raised in the families with conformity orientation

Abstract

This study aimed at predicting subjective well-being by using variables including extroversion, neuroticism, constructive problem solving, and dysfunctional problem solving. To do this, 528 students of Tehran’s Islamic Azad Universities were selected through multistage sampling, and then they completed five factor personality inventory, social problem -solving inventories, and subjective well – being scales. Data analysis, using structural equation modeling (SEM), showed that in general 47 percent of variance in subjective well – being could be explained by extroversion, neuroticism, constructive problem solving, and dysfunctional problem solving. The results indicated that extroversion positively and neuroticism and dysfunctional problem solving negatively predicted the subjective well – being, and neuroticism predicted dysfunctional problem solving positively and constructive social problem solving negatively. Extroversion didn’t not predict the constructive problem solving significantly, even though it predicted dysfunctional problem solving negatively. Moreover, the relation between constructive problem solving and subjective well- being wasn’t significant. Based on the results of this research, extroversion, neuroticism, constructive problem solving and dysfunctional problem solving had significant and determinant role in explaining subjective well – being.

Abstract

Given the importance of emotional intelligence in mental health, the purpose of this study is meta-analysis of the studies which were conducted on the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental health. Through meta-analysis method, this study integrates the results of various studies and then determines the effect size of the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental health. To achieve this purpose, of 45 studies, 30 studies  accepted methodologically, were selected and meta-analysis was done on them. Research tool for the study was meta-analysis checklist The present study is based on 4858 participants and 32 effect sizes. The findings indicates that in general, the effect size of  emotional intelligence and mental health is 0/48. Furthermore, When emotional intelligence is evaluated as trait, it has stronger correlation with mental health(r=0/51) rather than when it is evaluated as ability(r=0/38).Therefore,according to the present study, it can be concluded that higher  emotional intelligence has correlation with better mental health.

Abstract

The main aim of this study was to investigate the model of structural relations between neuroticism, academic stress and health behaviors among Iranian and Swedish students.199 students (100 Iranian and 99 Swedish) completed the Big Five Inventory-SV (BFI-SV, Rammstedt & John, 2007), the Academic Stress Questionnaire (ASQ, Zajacova, Lynch & Espenshade, 2005) and the Health Behavior Inventory (HBI, Broman, 1998). Relations between latent and observed variables in the conceptual Model were examined using structural equation modeling. The results of structural equation modeling showed that the global model had an acceptable fit to the data. In the global model, neuroticism and academic stress showed a significant positive relationship and the results of the global model indicated a significant negative relationship between neuroticism and academic stress with health behaviors. The results of the culture specificity of structural relations showed that structural relations were equivalent for the cultural groups. In sum, these findings through emphasizing the importance of the integration of trait and cultural psychology perspectives, retains heuristic value in designing studies, formulating hypotheses, and making theoretical refinements in the study of the structural relations between neuroticism, academic stress and health behaviors across cultures.

Abstract

The aim of present study was to investigate the relationship between two holistic constructs of self-awareness, mindfulness and integrative self-knowledge, and their associations with physical, psychological, social and spiritual health problem. To do so, 249 Iranian university students,170 women and 79men,completed following scales: Mindfulness Attention Awareness (Brown & Ryan, 2003), Integrative Self-Knowledge (Ghorbani, Watson & Hargis, 2008), Biopsychosociospiritual inventory (Katerndahl& Oyiriaru, 2007), and Depression Anxiety Stress (Lovibond&Lovibond, 1995). The data showed that these two constructs of self-awareness are negatively associated with all aspects of health. The integrative self-knowledge also predicted all measures of health that are beyond the mindfulness. These results point toward the integrative and temporal nature of self- awareness processes and suggest a need for studying the direction and nature of relation between Self-awareness and health.
