Abstract

Objective: Saffron is a drought-resistant plant that is being developed as an alternative crop in the Javanroud region. Given the novelty of this crop in the study area, the aim of this study is to assesss the development of saffron cultivation in Javanroud Township.
Methods: This study uses a mix-method design (qualitative-quantitative) and a case study research method. The study population included all saffron growers and agricultural experts in Javanroud township, which were interviewed using a purposive sampling method with 16 saffron growers and 10 experts. The data were collected through semi-structured interview and a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SWOT analysis. Finally, using the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM), the most appropriate strategies for developing saffron cultivation in the Javanroud region were selected.
Results: Based on the results, 7 categories were identified for the strengths of saffron cultivation development, including "the possibility of a family-based production process" and "the existence of appropriate saffron production capacities in the region". Also, 7 categories of weaknesses were identified, such as "non-acceptance of saffron as a cultivation pattern" and "bulk sales and lack of appropriate packaging". The identified opportunities for saffron cultivation development were 4 categories, the most important of which were "compatibility of saffron cultivation with the regional climate" and "access to wide markets for major saffron growers". Among the important threats to saffron cultivation development, "limited market" and "lack of sufficient inputs and equipment for saffron cultivation by the Agricultural Jihad Organization" were identified. Finally, the appropriate strategy for the development of saffron cultivation in Javanroud County was the offensive strategy (SO).
Conclusions: The implication of this study can help officials in the Agricultural Jihad Organization of Kermanshah province and Javanroud township to use appropriate strategies to develop saffron cultivation.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of artificial intelligence in empowering rural communities by mediating management support in rural areas of Natanz city.
Methods: This study is a descriptive survey of the field branch in terms of data collection and is applied in terms of purpose. The statistical population of the present study includes all villagers in Natanz county. The sample size was selected based on the Cochran formula as 371 people. The research tool includes a 30-question questionnaire in three sections: artificial intelligence with 5 questions, empowerment with 19 questions, and management support with 6 questions. Its validity has been examined and confirmed in a face, structural, and content manner, and its reliability has been confirmed based on the Cronbach's formula at 0/86. The collected data were analyzed based on structural equation path analysis in Smart PLS software.
Results: The results showed that artificial intelligence has an impact on empowerment with an impact coefficient of 0.636 and a T value of 12.002, artificial intelligence has an impact on management support with an impact coefficient of 0.392 and a T value of 3.875, and management support has an impact on empowerment with an impact coefficient of 0.332 and a T value of 5.533. Also, the results of the Sobel test showed that artificial intelligence has an impact on empowerment with a mediating role of management support with a T value of 678.7.
Conclusions: Based on the findings, it can be said that artificial intelligence can provide optimal methods for cultivating and harvesting crops through the analyzed data. Using artificial intelligence in educational platforms, distance education is provided for rural people. This technology can be especially useful for adolescents and young people in remote areas who have limited access to educational resources.

Abstract

Objective: Farming of native poultry at the village level will provide entrepreneurship and employment for rural women, provide needed protein, improve rural income and sustainable rural development. Despite the benefits of native poultry, the acceptance of this rural activity has not received much attention. Therefore, identifying the factors affecting of native poultry farming among villagers in Mazandaran province can provide grounds for improving the villagers' willingness to carry out this native activity.
Methods: The present study is quantitative and descriptive-survey. The statistical population is the total number of native poultry farmers in Mazandaran province, 64725 people. Multi-stage sampling method was used to select the sample. 382 native poultry farmers were randomly selected as samples. The required data were collected through a researcher-made questionnaire. The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by asking experts and the reliability was confirmed by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient.
Results: Personal-professional factors and social-environmental factors explain 73% of the changes in perceived usefulness and 36% of the changes in perceived ease of use. Perceived usefulness, attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control explain a total of 74% of the changes in behavioral intention, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention explain about 64% of the changes in native poultry farming behavior.
Conclusions: The main essence of the proposed model is behavioral intention over behavior, but perceived behavioral control is also an important variable that, along with behavioral intention, affects native poultry farming even more intensely. Increasing the risk-taking power of producers, improving the knowledge and skills of producers, raising public awareness for the consumption of native poultry, expanding the cooperative of native poultry producers, and providing low-interest and targeted bank loans are among the suggestions for the development of native poultry farming in Mazandaran province.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the present study is to survey the livelihood diversity status and its effects on increasing the resilience of the studied villages.
Methods: The present theoretical study is conducted with applied purposes using the descriptive-analytical method. The required data were collected through library and field (questionnaire and observation) methods and data analysis was done using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient, single sample t test and path analysis). The research statistical population is the resident households of 21 suburban villages of Dehdasht with 3538 households and using Cochran's formula 358 samples were randomly selected.
Results: The results indicate that, there is a direct and significant relationship between livelihood diversity and rural households' resilience. According to the obtained correlation coefficient (0.934) and the significance level of the test (0.000) it can be stated that the resilience of rural households to droughts is increased with promoting diversified livelihood. The results of path analysis also show that, coordination of institutions with direct impact of 0.108 has the least impact and saving with direct impact of 0.479 has the highest impact on the rural households' resilience in the studied area
Conclusions: Increasing livelihood diversity leads to an increase in the ability of households to deal with changes caused by climate change. Therefore, measures that lead to strengthening livelihood diversity and as a result the resilience of rural households should be among the priorities of rural development programs. Activities such as promoting diverse agricultural techniques, increasing access to insurance facilities, strengthening social capital, upgrading agricultural technologies and promoting optimal use of natural resources can be effective measures to increase livelihood diversity and improve the resilience of rural households.

Abstract

Objective: The current Research was conducted with the aim of Strategic Analysis of Rural Development Programs held by Basij Sazandegi Organization to formulate a superior strategic matrix.
Methods: The research followed the paradigm of mixed method (qualitative-quantitative) so that collecting data was done by interview and questionnaire tools in the qualitative and quantitative phases respectively. According to the purpose, the research statistical population consisted of two expert’s groups. In order to evaluate the environment of rural development programs, three groups of rural development organizations’ experts, experts from Basij Sazandegi Organization and rural informants (councils and local leaders), were surveyed. Each group consisted of 30 experts. Also, for developing the superior strategic matrix, 8 rural development experts were asked to rate importance of strategies. SWOT technique was used for environmental assessment and the superior strategic matrix was developed through hybrid TOPSIS-ANP method in Super Decisions software environment.
Results: The results of this study revealed that rural development programs exhibited strengths that surpassed their weaknesses, yet they were also confronted with threats. The superior strategic matrix further indicated that among the 10 strategies derived from environmental analysis, the strategy of "coordinating the Basij Sazandegi organization with other stakeholders of rural development in program formulation and reduction of redundancies" emerged as the foremost strategy. Subsequently, the strategies of "collaboration and regular meetings with local leaders for program implementation and evaluation of rural development initiatives" and "partnerships with associations and religious institutions to mobilize manpower and financial resources towards job creation projects" were ranked as the subsequent most important strategies.
Conclusions: In light of the research outcomes, it is recommended to expand the network of collaboration and cooperation with other rural development stakeholders and adhere to a comprehensive and targeted rural development model to enhance the effectiveness of constructive mobilization in RDPs of Basi.

Abstract

Objective: The rural entrepreneurial ecosystem plays a pivotal role in stimulating entrepreneurship and employment in rural areas. By leveraging entrepreneurship in rural regions, it is possible to address the challenges faced by these areas and create dynamic and innovative economies. Despite favorable climatic, geographic, connectivity, and accessibility conditions, Alborz province has experienced inappropriate economic conditions in its rural areas in recent years, including rising unemployment rates, low economic participation rates, and income disparities between rural and urban households. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the status of the rural entrepreneurial ecosystem in Alborz province as a key economic indicator.
Methods: This research was conducted within a quantitative research methodology. Data collection was carried out through a combination of library research and field surveys, with questionnaires being the primary tool in the field. The statistical population comprised the villages of Alborz province, from which a sample of 33 villages was selected. Using the Cochran formula, a sample size of 380 individuals was determined for completing the questionnaires. For data analysis, statistical tests such as chi-square, one-sample t-test, ANOVA, Duncan’s post hoc test, and Kriging interpolation were employed.
Results: The research findings indicate that the rural entrepreneurial ecosystem in Alborz province is in a suboptimal state. Out of the ten key indicator groups examined, including business indicators, financial indicators, educational indicators, human capital indicators, support indicators, market and customer indicators, social indicators, cultural indicators, infrastructure indicators, and innovation, research, and development indicators, only two groups were found to be in a favorable condition, while the remaining eight groups were in an unfavorable state. Additionally, the geographical distribution of the rural entrepreneurial ecosystem's status varies across the province.
Conclusions: The presence of hard infrastructure such as access to transportation networks and urban centers is insufficient on its own to foster the development of an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Concurrently, the development of soft infrastructure, including financial services, education, various support systems, human and social capital, and research and development, must also be prioritized.

Abstract

Objective: To sustain rural communities and enhance their economic and social vitality, their connections with urban centers and their position within the broader national framework must be preserved. Villages should adopt localized models to ensure their resilience. Unfortunately, a comprehensive model for sustainable rural livelihoods at the national and provincial levels is lacking, often leading to a uniform approach that overlooks regional specificities. This study aims to explore the revitalization of villages and the creation of sustainable livelihoods through biomass entrepreneurship. A biomass village is defined as a region where a comprehensive biomass utilization system is established and collaboratively managed by stakeholders in the area.
Methods: This research employed the meta-combination method to analyze a total of 120 articles and related studies sourced from the CIVILICA citation index (1380–1401). After applying inclusion criteria, 63 articles were selected for in-depth analysis. The study adopts a qualitative approach within the interpretive paradigm to explore a sustainable rural livelihood model grounded in the rural ecosystem. The research is practical, focusing on actionable insights for designing sustainable rural livelihoods.
Results: Key components identified for designing a sustainable rural livelihood model include: 1. Food Security and Nutrition: Ensuring rural food security and addressing malnutrition; 2. Human Capital Development: Increasing workforce productivity through higher literacy levels; 3. Tourism and Markets: Promoting sustainable tourism development and strengthening local markets and bazaars; 4. Infrastructure Investment: Investing in rural development infrastructure to support livelihoods.
Conclusions: The study synthesized findings from prior research conducted across various rural regions in the country to develop a model for sustainable rural livelihoods. The proposed model focuses on three primary axes:
  1. Rural Consumption Patterns: Encouraging sustainable consumption practices within rural households.
  2. Rural Poverty Reduction: Addressing poverty through targeted interventions and resource allocation.
  3. Household Livelihoods: Enhancing the economic resilience of rural households through diversified income sources.
By integrating these elements, the proposed model provides a comprehensive framework for revitalizing rural areas and fostering sustainable livelihoods. The findings underscore the importance of adopting localized, ecosystem-based approaches tailored to the unique needs of rural communities.

Abstract

Objective: A precise understanding of adaptive capacity in rural communities allows for the implementation of strategies tailored to different climatic conditions and the capabilities of rural populations. These strategies help reduce drought-related damages and enhance livability. This study aims to identify the impact of adaptation capacity components on the livability of rural households in the face of drought.
Method: A quantitative survey approach was used to collect and analyze data. The study employed a questionnaire as its primary data collection tool, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed using SmartPLS software to determine the impact of adaptive capacity factors on rural household livability under drought conditions. The target population were all rural farming households in Bavi County, Khuzestan Province and the Sample size was 347 household heads, selected using systematic sampling.
Findings: The adaptation strategy matrix identified five key drought response measures used by farmers: 1. Changing planting schedules, 2. Modifying harvest times, 3. Using savings, 4. Bartering goods, 5. Engaging in non-agricultural activities. Structural equation modeling (SEM) results confirmed that five key hypotheses including knowledge, utilization level, availability of resources and inputs, access to resources, and advisory services had a positive and significant impact on rural household livability during drought conditions.
Conclusion: To enhance rural households' resilience to drought, the study recommends:
  • Investing in knowledge and skill development for farmers,
  • Recognizing the importance of agricultural extension services in smart decision-making,
  • Improving access to resources, and
  • Implementing effective adaptation strategies.

Abstract

Objective: In recent decades, the issue of empowering rural women has attracted significant attention from rural development planners. One of the factors that plays a crucial role in this process is the establishment and expansion of microenterprises. The present study was conducted with the aim of examining the impact of creating and developing microenterprises on the empowerment of rural women.
Methods: This study employed meta-analysis as a statistical and systematic method for synthesizing the findings of previous research in the field under investigation. The statistical population consisted of accessible studies addressing the relationship between microenterprises and rural women’s empowerment, published in scientific databases (Sid, Ensani, Noormags, Magiran, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Scopus) during the years 2000–2024. In total, 720 studies were identified, of which 30 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were analyzed using CMA2 software. Based on the results of heterogeneity tests (Q index and I² statistic), a random-effects model was selected. Furthermore, to map the research network and identify frequently occurring concepts in this domain, VOSviewer software was used. For this purpose, research keywords were searched in international databases, and the extracted data from selected articles were stored in CSV format and imported into VOSviewer. Domestic sources were searched separately, and the relevant articles were manually entered into the software. Subsequently, scientometric indicators were analyzed using this tool.
Results: The results of the thematic network analysis using VOSviewer revealed co-occurrence between rural women’s empowerment and topics such as entrepreneurship, microcredit, and income. According to Begg and Mazumdar’s correlation test, the included studies demonstrated relative symmetry, confirming the absence of publication bias in the present research. The combined effect size was calculated at 0.453, which, based on Cohen’s criteria, indicates a moderate impact of microenterprise development on the empowerment of rural women.
Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate that the establishment and expansion of microenterprises have a significant and positive effect on the empowerment of rural women. Therefore, strengthening rural women’s businesses can serve as a key driver of empowerment, a process that requires supportive systems and institutional backing.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the present study is to explain the role of the rural creative economy in the development of rural entrepreneurship in Sonqor County (Iran).
Methods: This applied research employed a descriptive–analytical approach. The statistical population consisted of all experts and specialists in the field of rural entrepreneurship development in Sonqor County, numbering 43 individuals. Because the population size was small, a full census sampling method was used, and the entire population (43 individuals) was selected as the sample. The research instruments included two questionnaires on the creative economy and rural entrepreneurship, with 12 and 19 items, respectively. The validity of the questionnaires was confirmed using face and construct validity, and the reliability was approved through Cronbach’s alpha (0.79). The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and path analysis through PLS software.
Results: The results show that the proposed model explaining the role of the rural creative economy in the development of rural entrepreneurship in Sonqor County has a good level of fit. Overall, the creative economy has a positive and significant effect on rural entrepreneurship, with an impact coefficient of 0.38 and a critical value of 3.97. Furthermore, the creative economy has a positive and significant effect on: supportive policies (β = 0.39; t = 3.87), extension and training programs (β = 0.36; t = 4.07), infrastructure (β = 0.34; t = 3.48), environmental capacities (β = 0.37; t = 3.63), and collaborative/participatory economy (β = 0.45; t = 5.56).
Conclusions: If the creative economy is pursued in the rural areas of Sonqor County and the full potential of villages- particularly ideas and innovations- is utilized, the foundation will be laid for active participation and continuous effort among rural residents. Consequently, rural areas will experience improved conditions for entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the consequences of the common agricultural policy of the European Union on the spatial-economic development of rural areas since 1962, with the aim of a deeper understanding of its effects on the economic, social, and spatial structure of these areas.
Methods: This study was conducted with a qualitative approach and document analysis method. The theoretical framework of the research is based on the theory of integrated spatial development with a focus on the approach of sustainable agricultural and rural development, which seeks to balance the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of rural development.
Results: Numerous reforms in the common agricultural policy have created significant changes in agricultural spatial patterns, the economic structure of villages, and population distribution. This policy has played an important role in the spatial-economic reorganization of rural areas, but challenges such as regional inequalities and rural migration still remain. On the one hand, it has helped to improve agricultural productivity, protect the environment, and strengthen infrastructure, but on the other hand, the unequal distribution of subsidies and excessive focus on production in some areas have exacerbated regional inequalities.
Conclusions: This research emphasizes the necessity of adopting an integrated and balanced approach in rural development policy-making. Challenges such as climate change and global competition have increased the need to review this policy. Greater attention to innovation, digitization of agriculture, and strengthening of local value chains is necessary to increase the economic resilience of rural areas. The Common Agricultural Policy, despite its significant achievements, needs continuous reforms to adapt to changing circumstances.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to identify the prerequisites and components related to technological entrepreneurship in the rural areas of the Khaf territorial system. Given the concentration of technological development in urban areas and the deprivation of rural communities from its benefits, this research investigates strategies for promoting technological entrepreneurship as a tool for reducing migration, strengthening the local economy, and improving the quality of life in rural regions.
Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using the grounded theory approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 experts active in the field of rural entrepreneurship. The data were analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding processes.
Results: The results revealed that the factors influencing technological entrepreneurship fall into three categories: (1) individual factors such as motivation, risk tolerance, and technological skills; (2) environmental factors, including access to digital infrastructure, governmental support, and a culture receptive to technology; and (3) structural factors such as supportive policies and inter-institutional cooperation. Major challenges identified include mono-product economies, lack of specialized training, absence of communication infrastructure, and gender inequality. Proposed strategies include identifying local capacities, developing infrastructure, targeted training, and strengthening community participation.
Conclusions: Technological entrepreneurship can contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas by generating new employment opportunities, enhancing productivity, and preserving cultural identity. Developing a coherent framework that emphasizes local conditions and coordination between governmental and private institutions is essential for the success of this approach. The findings of this study provide practical insights for rural development policymakers and planners to design and implement more effective programs based on the key identified factors.

Abstract

Objective: Food security is a major issue in sustainable development and in improving the quality of life of rural households. Agricultural production plays a crucial role in meeting nutritional needs and enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities. The purpose of this study is to examine the contribution of agricultural production to food security in rural households using a meta-analytic approach based on data extracted from reputable scientific databases.
Methods: The statistical population included studies related to the role of agricultural production in food security among rural households published in scientific databases—SID, Ensani, Noormags, Magiran, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Scopus from 2000 to 2025. Based on the inclusion criteria, 27 studies were selected and analyzed using CMA2 software. In addition, VOSviewer was utilized to construct a thematic network and identify frequently used terms. Keywords were searched in international databases, and data from selected studies were stored in a CSV file for import into VOSviewer. A separate search was conducted for domestic sources, and their information was entered manually. Scientometric indicators were analyzed using VOSviewer. Due to heterogeneity in the data- identified through Q and I² indices- a random-effects model was selected.
Results: The thematic network analysis showed a meaningful relationship between agricultural production and food security in rural households. Begg and Mazumdar’s correlation test confirmed relative symmetry in the included studies, indicating an absence of publication bias. The overall effect size was estimated at 0.507, which, according to Cohen’s criteria, is considered high.
Conclusions: The results demonstrate that increased agricultural productivity leads to long-term improvements in food security among rural households. The vocabulary network analysis also showed that food security is linked to dietary quality and diversity, as well as challenges such as climate change, poverty, and gender issues, highlighting the need for comprehensive and integrated approaches to address these concerns.
